A Message From Aj Siergiej DPT, Tpi-M2 Owner & Founder of Athletic Synergy

It might be quite easy to dismiss an injury as “nothing major” and “put up with it,” moving on as best you can if you’ve recently sustained one or have been dealing with it for some time.

Or, it can be simple to become discouraged and experience a sense of “stuckness,” wondering if you’ll ever be able to resume exercising or participating in sports the way you used to.

We frequently witness people experiencing what is happening to us if it is. Regardless of the season, we treat patients in our physio clinics in Buffalo, New York who are dealing with sports or exercise-related ailments.

Normally, doctors and other health care providers will simply advise patients to “relax” or to stop engaging in that activity. This is absurd, in our opinion, and is harming you more and raising the possibility of further accidents. This is because while we rest, our muscles start to weaken and atrophy. It explains why so many people who are dealing with sports injuries are asking:

Why Am I Still Dealing With an Injury That Prevents Me From Being Active and Participating in My Favorite Sport After Months of Suffering From It?

The majority of people believe that a sports injury would heal with a few days of rest and that they may immediately return to their activity or exercise. But, when they resume activity, they are still limited, and occasionally the restriction is worse than it was initially. Typically, there is little to no discomfort while you rest, but as soon as you get moving again, the agony returns, and no matter how much rest you give it, it doesn’t appear to be getting any better.

Do You Sound Like That?

Another situation that frequently occurs in our physical therapy clinic is when patients visit the doctor, who instructs them to relax, wear support, take a break, and “try some painkillers” to “see how it goes.” They return to the same doctor 4 weeks later since the injury hasn’t improved, only to receive MORE REST and ANOTHER prescription for even stronger drugs.

The issue is that complete rest is rarely the greatest recommendation when it comes to sports injuries like hamstrings, ankle sprains, a runner’s knee, etc.

Because you’ve been told various things by various people, you might be feeling confused and frustrated. Perhaps you believe you have a back problem, but the issue stems from your hip.

Sports injuries may be quite perplexing since, more often than not, the area of discomfort is not the one that has to be corrected and worked on, and if you rest for an extended period, other parts of the body become just as, if not more problematic!

Because they misunderstand what “resting” entails, many people continue to delay choosing how to treat their injury and get back to exercising. Even worse, many people simply come to terms with the fact that “their days of being active are finished” as if it were inevitable.

Are You Feeling That Way, Too?

Here Are 7 More Reasons Why a Sports Injury Can Be Persisting Longer Than It Should if You’re Currently Frustrated and Dealing With One:

1. You expected it to go away by itself, but it didn’t.

2. You saw a doctor, who advised you to relax, wear a support, and take painkillers, but the medication didn’t help, and as it started to wear off, you were back in excruciating pain.

3. You simply accepted the advice of a family member or acquaintance who claimed that everyone becomes more prone to sports injuries as they age.

4. You’ve previously asked a physiotherapist or other healthcare professionals for assistance, but nothing they said or did seem to be of any help.

5. You’ve tried using items like heating pads, ice, and athletic supports, but they didn’t do much to reduce the discomfort or allow you to resume exercising without difficulty.

6. You were in a lot of discomforts and felt it would be best to rest, but it still irritates you every day.

7. In the hopes that it might ease the pain, you opted to have a couple of “sports massages,” but they did nothing more than make you feel slightly “painful” or perhaps “relaxing,” not at all helping to permanently repair your injury.

If any of these things have happened to you, we would be happy to assist you and invite you to schedule a conversation with one of our physical therapists to discuss your situation and learn what may be done to help. The fact that you have already tried any or all of these things is a GOOD THING since it puts you one step closer to discovering what does work when you are aware of what doesn’t!

If you want to speak with one of our representatives to schedule a call, click the link below. There is no cost for the call, and there is no pressure to schedule any appointments with us after it is complete. Making the best decision possible on what to do next is our goal.

Here are 4 options for you:

1. You must first decide whether to seek assistance. Many people put off seeking treatment for far too long, believing that the suffering will eventually fade. Six months later, nothing has changed, and they are still tolerating it. Or if things worsen, they continue to refrain from participating in sports or exercising at all.

2. Then, perform the RIGHT exercises. One of the best ways to recover from an injury quickly and safely is to perform the right series of progressed exercises. The right exercises provided to you by a physical therapist will help reduce pain, allow you to move freely, and enable you to return to sports quickly. They will also ensure that the issues don’t return any time soon.

3. Avoid “too much rest” – while it is essential to the healing process, excessive rest will not hasten your recovery. Many people think that complete relaxation from exercise equates to recuperation. Yet, blood flow is required for an injury to heal, which rest prohibits. To heal the injury and speed up your return to activity and health, it would be extremely beneficial if you were given the proper recovery and strengthening activities.

4. Real, “hands-on” physical therapy is recommended since it is effective in treating sports injuries. In reality, Athletic Synergy offers year-round assistance to persons who have sustained sports-related injuries. Physical therapy can help you get back to living the life you deserve as soon as possible if your injury prevents you from participating in sports and remaining active, if it affects your employment, if it threatens your independence, or if it gets in the way of spending meaningful time with family and friends.
